1.1m Pensioners Missing £458/Month Attendance Allowance – Check Now

If you’re over State Pension age and managing a long-term health condition or disability, you could be missing out on up to £458.40 every month. New figures suggest over 1.1 million pensioners aren’t claiming Attendance Allowance — a benefit worth up to £5.2 billion annually that goes unclaimed.

Attendance Allowance is a tax-free, non-means-tested benefit designed to help with the extra costs of living with a disability, long-term illness, or health condition. Unlike some benefits, it doesn’t affect your State Pension or other payments, and you don’t have to prove you’re hard up to qualify.

The benefit is paid at two rates: £76.70 per week (£306.80 every four weeks) for lower-level support, or £114.60 per week (£458.40 every four weeks) for higher-level support. That’s up to £5,959 extra per year — money that could genuinely ease financial pressure if you’re paying for care, extra heating, specialist equipment, or other disability-related costs.

The conditions that qualify are broad and include arthritis, heart disease, respiratory disorders, hearing loss, visual impairments, cerebrovascular disease, and many others. The key question isn’t whether you have a specific diagnosis — it’s whether you need extra help during the day or night because of your condition.

Why are so many people missing out? MoneySavingExpert — the consumer website founded by Martin Lewis — suggests Attendance Allowance is “massively under-claimed” partly because many people simply don’t know it exists or assume they won’t qualify.

There’s also a Scotland-specific version called Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP) with the same rates and eligibility rules.

If you think you might qualify, check the official eligibility guidance on the GOV.UK website. The application process takes time, so don’t delay — apply as soon as you’re confident you meet the criteria. You can backdate claims in some cases, so even if you’ve been missing out, there may still be money to recover.

Head to GOV.UK now to read the full eligibility guidance and download the application form. Don’t leave this money on the table.
