Married Pensioners: Check If You're Missing Out on £4,300 DWP Payment
If you’re a married pensioner with a modest income, you could be missing out on thousands of pounds in extra government support. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates that around 760,000 pensioners are entitled to Pension Credit but aren’t claiming it — and that’s money you might desperately need right now.
What is Pension Credit?
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit designed to top up your weekly income if you’re over State Pension age and earning below a certain threshold. It’s separate from your State Pension and can add an average of £4,300 per year to your income.
The income thresholds are straightforward: if you’re single, you qualify if your weekly income is below £238. If you’re married or have a partner, your combined weekly income needs to be under £363.25.
Who can claim?
The good news is that having savings or owning your home won’t automatically disqualify you. Even an award of just £1 per week unlocks access to other valuable support, including help with housing costs, heating bills, and Council Tax.
If your income is slightly above the threshold, you may still qualify if you have a disability, care for someone, have significant savings, or face housing costs.
Important: savings don’t count fully
If you have £10,000 or less in savings, they won’t affect your claim at all. Above that, every £500 counts as £1 of weekly income — so don’t assume you’re ineligible just because you’ve been careful with money.
How to check and claim
Use the free online Pension Credit calculator at GOV.UK to get an instant eligibility check and estimate. The DWP processes about 78% of claims within their 50 working day target, meaning if you apply this month, you could receive your first payment by August — including any arrears owed to you.
If you prefer to speak to someone, call the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234 (8am–6pm, Monday to Friday).
With the cost of living still squeezing household budgets, every pound counts. If you’re in doubt about eligibility, it takes just minutes to check — and the potential reward is substantial.
