DWP Now Records Benefit Assessments by Default – Here's What You Need to Know
From today (29 June 2026), if you’re claiming disability or sickness benefits, your health assessment will be automatically recorded unless you actively choose to opt out. This is a major change that could give you more protection and transparency when dealing with the Department for Work and Pensions.
What’s changing and why it matters
Until now, claimants had to request an audio recording of their assessment themselves – but fewer than 3% bothered to do so. The new opt-out system flips this on its head: recording becomes the default, meaning you’ll get one automatically unless you say otherwise.
This applies to assessments for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Work Capability Assessments (WCA) in Universal Credit and Employment and Support Allowance, and Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB).
Why is this a big deal? Many disabled people and disability charities have raised concerns about trust in the assessment process. Having an audio recording means there’s a clear, accurate record of what was said and done during your appointment. If you disagree with the outcome and decide to appeal, you’ll have that recording to refer back to – which could strengthen your case.
The government also plans to use these recordings to identify problems with how assessments are carried out and improve the overall quality of the process.
What you need to do
If you’re happy to be recorded, you don’t need to do anything. Your next assessment will be recorded as standard.
If you’d prefer not to be recorded, you can opt out. You should be given clear information about this right when you receive your assessment appointment letter, and you can also opt out through the assessment supplier’s website.
What happens to the recordings
Your recording will be available to you if you need to appeal a decision. Written reports will still be used as part of the decision-making process, but the audio recording provides an additional, accurate backup.
