British Gas axes 1,300 jobs: what you need to know
British Gas owner Centrica has announced plans to cut 1,300 jobs over the next two years, raising concerns for workers in an already challenging energy sector. If you work for the company or are worried about job security in the energy industry, here’s what you need to know.
Centrica is cutting 1,300 roles across two years — 500 announced last month and a further 800 announced today. Around 500 of these losses will come from customer operations roles, with additional cuts to offshore outsourced support and group support functions. The company says this represents about a 14 per cent reduction in its customer operations team.
The firm blames changing customer behaviour. Centrica reports a 20 per cent year-on-year drop in customer contacts, with 90 per cent of customers now using digital channels instead of phone support. The company has been managing some losses through natural attrition (staff leaving without being replaced), but more formal redundancies are now planned.
If you work for Centrica and face redundancy, you have legal rights. You’re entitled to proper notice, a redundancy payment if you’ve worked there for at least two years, and a consultation period before the company makes final decisions. Check your employee handbook or ask your HR department for details on your specific entitlements.
If you lose your job, register with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) immediately — you may qualify for Jobseeker’s Allowance or Universal Credit. You’ll also be able to access free support through the National Career Service and local job centres.
For those considering switching energy suppliers, Centrica’s job cuts shouldn’t directly affect your service — but it’s worth comparing deals with competitors like OVO, E.ON, and EDF to ensure you’re getting value. Centrica also welcomed plans to remove VAT on household bills, though this has yet to be fully implemented.
