Northern Ireland heating oil prices jump £100 in weeks
Home heating oil prices in Northern Ireland have spiked sharply, with the average cost of 500 litres jumping from £346.59 to £445.37 in just three weeks – a rise of nearly £99 (29%). For the two-thirds of Northern Ireland households reliant on oil heating, this is a serious blow to already stretched household budgets.
The price surge is linked to tensions between the US and Iran, which have pushed global oil prices up. According to the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland (CCNI), a 900-litre delivery now costs an average of £789.07 – up £173.84 since early July. While prices had dropped to a four-month low at the end of June, they’re still well below the April peak of £612.37 for 500 litres.
The real concern is what happens when winter arrives. Unlike gas, which you can top up in smaller amounts, heating oil requires bulk deliveries – you can’t simply buy £40 worth. This means families must find large sums upfront to stay warm through the colder months. For families already struggling with the cost of living, another sharp rise could be devastating.
People across Northern Ireland have expressed genuine worry. One retired couple acknowledged they’re fortunate because their pension provides a buffer, but feared for families with children. A rented household noted that while their landlord covers oil costs, the increase is “completely ridiculous” and will hit families hard when winter arrives.
The CCNI warns that prices are likely to stay elevated until US-Iran negotiations resume, so there’s no immediate relief in sight.
