Pubs and Live Music Venues Get 20% Business Rates Cut From April 2026
If you run a pub, social club or live music venue, there’s good news coming your way. From April 2026, the government is cutting business rates bills by 20% for nearly 32,000 of these venues across England — saving the typical pub around £1,100 a year.
Business rates are a tax that businesses pay to local councils based on the estimated rental value of their property. For pubs and hospitality venues, these bills have been a real struggle, and many have closed in recent years. This new cut is designed to help reverse that trend and bring back life to local high streets and town centres.
Who benefits from this?
The relief applies to pubs, social clubs, and live music venues. If your business falls into one of these categories, you should automatically receive the discount when the new financial year begins in April 2026. There’s no application needed — it will be applied to your bill by your local council.
How is the government paying for this?
The £100 million annual cost of this scheme is being funded in two ways. First, the government is reviewing reliefs given to businesses it says don’t benefit communities — particularly vape shops. Second, it’s cracking down on sellers using online marketplaces who aren’t paying the right amount of tax, which puts honest businesses at an unfair advantage.
What should you do?
If you own or manage a qualifying venue, there’s nothing to do right now. Keep an eye on your business rates bill from April 2026 onwards to confirm the discount has been applied. If you don’t see the 20% reduction, contact your local council’s business rates team.
This announcement is part of a wider government push to support high streets and local communities, alongside other measures like the £2 bus fare cap and electricity bill VAT relief.
