Train vs Electric Car: Can You Save £9,000 a Year on UK Commutes?
A new analysis has highlighted just how expensive train travel has become in the UK – and it raises an important question for anyone commuting regularly between major cities: could switching to an electric car actually save you thousands of pounds a year?
The comparison centres on Manchester-to-London travel. According to research by car-buying website Carwow, an annual season ticket from Manchester to London costs £20,560 per year. If you travel just once a week (40 times annually), a day return ticket without a railcard will set you back £15,840 per year – or £47,520 over three years.
By contrast, the same journey in an electric vehicle would cost less than half that amount. An EV could save a regular commuter more than £9,000 per year compared to train travel – and over three years, the savings add up to around £27,000.
This comparison is striking because it exposes the real cost of Britain’s rail fares, even after the Government’s landmark nationwide fare freeze (in place until March 2027). The freeze was designed to help passengers, but it clearly hasn’t brought fares down to competitive levels for longer-distance travel.
Of course, whether an EV makes sense for you depends on your personal circumstances. You’ll need to factor in the upfront cost of buying an electric car, charging costs at home or at public chargepoints, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation. You should also consider convenience – a two-hour-plus train journey gives you time to work or relax, whereas driving requires concentration.
For frequent commuters covering long distances, though, the maths are increasingly difficult to ignore. If you’re currently using the train for regular weekly or fortnightly trips between major cities, it’s worth running your own sums. Compare your annual train costs to the total cost of ownership for an affordable EV – you might be surprised at what you find.
The key takeaway: before you book your next season ticket, do the maths. Speak to a motoring adviser about EV running costs and total ownership expense, and get a realistic figure for your specific route and travel frequency. The savings could genuinely transform your household budget.
